Barbican was a street in the ward of Cripplegate, in the City of London in (London, England). The area was home to tailors, leather merchants, and other labourers associated with the rag trade. After the area was severely damaged due to bombing during World War II, the site was rebuilt to hold the Barbican Estate, a residential complex of approximately 2000 flats, maisonettes and houses. The Barbican is a prominent example of British brutalist architecture. It includes multiple cultural institutions including the Barbican Arts Centre, the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Barbican public library.
