When Bell Yard ran along the site of a house and grounds, it was known as “The Bell,” which belonged to the Knights Hospitallers. In James Malcolm Rymer’s The String of Pearls, or, The Barber of Fleet Street: a Domestic Romance (1850), this is the location of Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop, a popular place amongst lawyers in the Temple. Presently, Bell Yard is the heart of London’s legal district.
