Bethnal Green Road is one of the streets near where Chanu and Naznee live in, "Brick Lane." They describe the road as grimy because they feel as if they have been restricted to only seeing these few streets during their time in London, and not going out and exploring the rest of the foreign city. Bethnal Green is located on the East End of London, in the Tower Hamlets sector. During the Second World War, Bethnal Greeen was a primary target for Blitz attacks, and the Bethnal Green tube station is where the worst civillian attack of the Second World War occured. There were a lot of slums, and Betnal Green is home to a lot of immigration, with nearly 1/3 of it's residents being from Bangladesh.
