Exhibit:

The Bible In Literature: An Independent Reading Project

The major premise of EN 230: The BIble As Literature is that the Bible is not only a seminal text of Western culture as the foundational texts for Judaism and Christianity but also a literary text deserving of the attention we would give to any work of literature.  Because of the unique position the Bible holds in Western--if not World--culture, it is also important as a source text for other literary works, classics such as Milton's Paradise Lost as well as contemporary works such as Alan Lightman's Mr. g.  Therefore, as a complementary dimension of our course, you will also participate in an independent reading project that allows you to explore the influence of the Bible on a single work of literature.   In some instances, a Biblical story will provide the narrative for the new work.  In other cases, the Biible may be an allusion behind the title of the text.

For this COVE Exhibit, each of you will create your own gallery presenting your book.   Your gallery will include both images and written text.  The gallery will include the following sections:  plot summary of the book, a brief biography of the author, the presentation of the BIblical materials relevant to the book, and an intertextual analysis of the relationship between the Biblical text and the new book.
