The British Museum is located in the Bloomsbury area of London and was the first national public museum in the world. It first opened in 1759 and covered all fields of human knowledge, but it was founded on enlightenment values and knowledge. The British Museum is mentioned in Monica Ali's Brick Lane. It is only mentioned once as a question from Chanu to a conductor:
"Can You tell me something? To your mind, does the British Museum rate more highly than the National Gallery? Or would you recommend gallery over museum?"
By 2001, when Brick Lane took place, the museum had become a landmark in London.
