Cannes, France is a city located on the French Riviera. It enjoyed a period of calm in the 18th century and flourished in the 19th century. At the end of the 19th century, several railways were completed in Cannes, which prompted the arrival of streetcars. Amy Levy mentions Cannes, France in her novel Romance of a Shop(1888) when Conny, one of the main characters, visits Cannes for a few months with her family.

"How long do you expect to be at Cannes?’ Gertrude said, after one of the pauses which kept on stretching themselves baldly across the conversation.” (Chapter 22)
