2. Britain had control of Corfu from 1815 to about 1823. The Greek Civil War took place between 1943-1950 between the Greek governement and the communist party of Greece known as the 'Democratic Army for Greece.' The US and Great Britain supported the former. The Soviet Union and many European countries (Bulgaria, Albania) supported the latter. The Greek Government Army, funded by the US, eventually took over the DAfG. This was the beginning f the Cold War. The Greek government army joined NATO soon after.
3. Understanding what was going on during this time in Greece makes you wonder if Edith hated Greece. Or, by looking at point g., if the presence of the war is what made her so 'coarse.' I imagine that Captain Lennox, being a captain during the war, would not have been around a lot, so Edith would hav had to do things herself, even with the help of a maid. BecauseEdith had to do things herself, that could be a reason wy Edith became rude.
