Count Von Count - Sesame Street

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

One of my first memories of Victorian Gothic representation was from watching the children's tv show, Sesame Street. This show featured a Muppet named Count Von Count, who was modeled after Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. He first appeared on the show in 1972, and while he is inspired by Dracula, he bears very few similarties to the original Gothic Monster's personality. This muppet is very friendly and is obsessed with counting. However, many of Count Von Counts surroundings are modeled after classic Gothic Tropes. Count Von Count lives in a cobweb infested castle, has thunder and lightning following him, lives with bats, and does not have a reflection in the mirror. The Muppet also wears dark, moody clothing like a long black cape and possesses hypnotic powers. These charactertics are all similar to the original novel Dracula. This Muppet is a beloved character to many, and is featured in many episodes of Sesame Street as well as many books and video games.
