At this point, Candide has lost Cunegonde again (but she is alive) and killed her brother in Paraguay. As he flees with his servant Cacambo they end up in El Dorado (they say it is in Peru). This is an important location in realation to Pangloss' philosphy. Though everything is for the best, he says, "I own, my friend, once more that the castle where I was born is nothing in comparison with this: but after all, Miss Cunegonde is not here..." There is a shift in how the rest of the events play out; they are all in pursuit of his beloved. She is his ideal of home and that is what he chooses at the farthest location in the novel.
