The Fort Mojave Indian Village is where poet Natalie Diaz was born and raised. The village is part of the large Mojave Indian reservation that sits on the border of California, Nevada, and Arizona. Diaz currently lives there now after returning to the US after leaving behind playing professional basketball in Europe. You can see the impact that growing up in the Mojave Indian village had on Diaz’s life and writing. She often makes references to her language, culture, or the way she was treated by those around her in her writings. As well, the Fort Mojave Indian Village functions as the setting of much of her poetry since her poems often follow her or her family. You cannot truly understand Natalie Diaz or the subject matter of her poems if you do not understand where she comes from. This is because she makes sure that her writing is rich with her own culture and her life.
