Dante Gabriel Rosetti

Dante Gabriel Rosetti (1828-1882), was a poet, painter, and illustrator during the French Decadence movement. Rosetti often wrote poems that matched his paintings throughout his career including Proserpine, a painting of his lover captured as the Greek goddess Proserpine. Over the course of his career, Rosetti captured themes such as idealized, fleeting love, and disappointment in his work. At times this made it difficult to compare or group Rosettis' work into a category along with other Victorian artists as his work reflected the uncertainties of Victorian society and loss of faith.

Stéphane Mallarmé

Portrait

Stéphane Mallarmé, (born March 18, 1842,—died Sept. 9, 1898), was a French Poet during the Decadent movement whose work was largely influenced by Charles Baudelaire. Mallarme centered his work around the concept of reality, which was a concept that Baudelaire discussed in his work as well. Mallarme was known for his "magical" use of language in his poems about reality and his obsession with the ideal world. Although Mallarme's large collection of poems was never finished, what was recovered of his work had a lasting impression on French Decadence. By the end of his career, he was considered one of the great poets of the decadent era.

The Yellow Book

A notable exponent that was labeled "decadent" was not so much a writer, but an artist. Aubrey Beardsley illustrated The Yellow Book with distinguishable and erotic illustrations that marked the decadent era. The Yellow Book was a periodical, featuring essays, poems, fiction, and illustrations. It was launched in 1894 and it ran until 1897, with the cover colored in yellow and green to represent bruising and decay a theme that French Decadence was associated with.
