The Trail of Tears

This image portrays the Trail of Tears, which began in 1831 after Andrew Jackson's signing of the Indian Removal Act. Many tribes were forced out of their lands in the eastern part of the United States and made to travel far west into the untamed lands beyond the Mississippi. Artist Robert Lindneaux created this painting to honor the Cherokee people specifically, as the Cherokee nation lost over three thousand lives on their forced journey west. Eglinton Tournament: A View of the Lists

The tournament was organized to resemble a traditional, medieval tournament as closely as possible, from the invitations to the clothing to the royalty. In this image, we can see the entire arena and the stands from an angle during the jousting event. On the far right are the stands, where the onlookers sit. In the middle of the stands, between the two higher structures, would normally sit whoever was presiding over the tournament. In medieval times, this would have been someone of the royal family. The Bloody Week Barricades
Painting of the Barricade of Place Blanche being defended by women during the Bloody Week

The last seven days of the Paris Commune are known as The Bloody Week. During this time Adolphe Thier laid siege to to take back the city from the Communards. The Parisians worked together to set up large barricades to protect the city from the incoming incursion. They knew this was a losing battle from the start, but were so radicalized at this point by the conservative French government that they refused to back down. It is estimated that 10,000 Communards were killed before the city was under control.

Aversion Therapy Advertisement

This image shows an adervtisement for an electroshock therapy machine. It was marketed to treat many different mental disorders, but is notable for it's treatment of "transvestism" and "sexual preference". On the effectiveness margin on the photo, it speaks of how effective the shock therapy is in averting homosexual attraction. The casual nature of advertisements like this shows just how well-recepted involuntary aversion therapy was among the general population. Additionally, propaganda like this shows just how pervasive violent homophobia was in the early 20th century.

This photo by an unknown artist illustrates the crowded, inhumane conditions of the asylum. The women are tightly packed together and they seem to be uncomfortable. A few of the women are looking upwards as if thhat is their way to escape, while others like the woman in the bottom left corner, hold their hands to their ears and wait for the commotion to end. Children Working in a Factory

This image shows two young boys working upon a machine in a factory. In this era, many children had to work to support their families, whether because the adults had died, lost their jobs, or been arrested and carried to debtor's prison. Though these boys don't appear to be in any danger, many children lost fingers, limbs, or even their lives by becoming caught in the machinery. Even if they weren't terribly injured or killed, the poor conditions of the factories themselves might make them ill or eventually kill them. The general public was always sckeptical of Miller's predictions. However after each failed prediction they became more and more skeptical. While these failures never stopped Miller from trying to predict the end of the world, they hurt his following. He began to be represented in the press as a "false prophet". Something that beleivers in christitanity would take very seriously as they are warned to avoid them through stories in the Bible. "Oscar Wilde at Bow Street"

Full Title: "Oscar Wilde at Bow Street" from the Illustrated Police News

Published: 20 April 1895, London

The Illustrated Police News was a weekly tabloid newspaper that depicted real-life crime stories. It was published between 1864 and 1938. On the cover of this issue, Oscar Wilde is depicted arriving on Bow Street in his carriage as he is "hooted by the mob." The other drawings on the page also show Wilde as "ill in prison" and "in the dock."
Underground Railroad and The Cotton Gin

The first image is of the original patent for the machine that changed the market for enslaved labor completely, the cotton gin. Eli Whitney invented the time-saving machine with the tedious purpose of removing seeds found in cotton balls. The submission of these drawings on June 20, 1793, enabled the market to grow significantly. This in turn leads to the increase of demand for slave workers.
