George Eliot, Engraving by Henry Davidson (1899)

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

George Eliot, Engraving by Henry Davidson (1899)

American artist Henry Davidson (1858-1924), likely working from a reproduction of François D'Albert Durade's 1881 painting, produced this half-tone plate engraving on wood for The Century Magazine (Fields 1899, 58: 455). At one point, he worked for Harper's New Monthly Magazine under the supervision of Thomas Johnson, whose 1881 engraving of George Eliot is also included in this gallery (Whittle 1919, 31-32; Harper's 1881, 62: 913). In addition to Eliot, other noteworthy subjects of Davidson's engravings include Princess Anne of Denmark (Whittle 1919, 32), William Makepeace Thackeray (Holland 1911, 82: 330), Thomas Hardy, and President Woodrow Wilson (Holland 1914, 88: 720, 26).
