Gravesend is a city in Kent, England. It has one of the oldest markets in the country, dating back to 1268. In the book, "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano," it is mentioned as Olaudah is travelling back to the River Thames in England. In the 1400s, a royal grant was issued in Gravesend that allowed men to operate boats between London and the town. During this time, it was not safe to travel by foot from Gravesend to London as there were many highwaymen that you would encounter along the way. In the 1800s there were also military barracks installed in Gravesend.
"But, just as we had got a little below Gravesend, we came alongside of a ship which was going away the next tide for the West Indies; her name was the Charming Sally, Captain James Doran; and my master went on board and agreed with him for me; and in a little time I was sent for into the cabin." (Chaper 4)
