Hotel Transylvania

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

I think that it is easy to overlook Hotel Transylvania when discussing Gothic. It seems like such a gag on the idea of the Gothic. While there is a lot of goofing on the ideas, it does share some of the same themes. I want to focus on the anxieties and the ideas of separation that are continually shown throughout the movie. In the movie, the humans are the outsider and they play the role of the traditional Gothic monster. They intend to harm the monsters that are not doing anything except celebrating a birthday. The fears that the monsters have relate back to their stories, but again, they just want to be left alone from the rest of the world, and humans are the villains, they are attacking people who want nothing to do with them, almost reminiscent of the Indians in The Moonstone. They want something, and they will do anything to get it back. Hotel Transylvania is a parody, but it can also continue the same themes that have been a part of the genre for as long as it has existed.
