I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death is a memoir written by Maggie O'Farrell in which she recalls 17 instances in which she had nearly died throughout her life. Each chapter is named by the part of the body that was compromised in the near-death experience and the year each instance occurred is listed next to the chapter's body-part title in the Table of Contents. In Chapter 8: Lungs (2000), Maggie nearly drowns on a beach in India. She is caught in a riptide and thrown face-first into the ocean floor, causing her to bleed. Maggie has a spatial orientation issue from childhood illness that affects her movement and balance, making it particularly difficult for her to reorientate herself if she is in the water, as this is not the first time Maggie has nearly drowned.
