J.K. Rowling.

Prior to the first book in the series being published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books, Rowling signed a five-year contract with Christopher Little Literary Agency in April 1996. In August 1996 Bloomsbury Publishing bought the book for an advance of £1,500, which Rowling received £1,250 of it. In May of 1997, it is said by Christopher Little that they want to use Rowling’s initials instead of her full name to appeal to their audience and to conceal that she was a woman author. On June 12th, 1997, Scholastics editorial director Arthur Levine bought the rights to publish Harry Potter in the United States for $100,000. On June 27th, 1997, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was published by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, under the name J.K. Rowling (“Timeline”). In order for the book to be published in the US by Scholastic it had to be under a different title which was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It was released on September 1st, 1998, and six further titles soon followed in the Harry Potter series, each one achieving record-breaking success (“J.K. Rowling”).
