"Babe" Didrikson vs. Dorothy Bradley

There are many of other people who had the goal of staying in good physical shape as Dorothy Bradley had. "Babe" Didrikson was a famous female athlete who excelled in many different sports, but her favorite was golf. When you hear the word famous athlete you automatically think that she was skinny and in shape. She was indeed, but she wasn't just born that way. Any athlete, especially Didrikson, had to work for these acomplishments. She worked out and stayed in shape to become a titled "famous athlete". This also ties into the story about Dorothy Bradley because she worked out and bettered her diet and body, and had a great outcome. While Babe dropped out of school to become this stellar athlete, she was hated for it by many men. This was a period of sexism where she was supposed to be at home "all prettied up and waited for the phone to ring". In comparison to Bradley we see both females working out to achieve something.

Martha Holmes Photography Before Dorothy Bradley

Not only did this amazing female photographer capture Dorothy Bradley's weight-loss journey, she also captured other amazing moments in this time period. This photo shows a bunch of female's smiling behind a black male, who was a jazz singer. During this specific time, it was odd seeing a black male hugging a white female. At first the "LIFE" magazine wasn't sure about uploading this picture, but they ended up doing so. I believe that this is important because it shows that Holmes was not just a photographer who captured people's weight, but also different moments that seemed odd but amazing. Holmes started off as a color photographer and got moved to a black-and-white photographer. She became this during the WWII, when men got sent off to serve. She was a photographer who took "portraits of people and places and allowed her subjects to shine through and offer a personal insight into them". To me this is relevant because it ties back to the picture of Dorothy Bradley as well, because it shows her shining through a tough time and breaking out of it to become a successful nurse.

"LIFE" Article

This "LIFE" article talks about the top rated health issue in the U.S. was obesity, which Dorothy Bradley struggled with. Bradley wanted to go into the medical field to become a doctor, so when she was around 205lbs. she felt like it was her time to lose the weight and get into good shape. When she started to do so, she fell short considering she didn't have the money to keep up. Within two years of being on a strict diet she lost 60lbs. After losing some weight she graduated with her nursing "cap" and became a head nurse in Kentucky. There are pills that people can take to lose but this was not a healthy way to do so. Bradley took it into her own hands, she went to see a doctor, went on a diet, fell short, began her diet again. This article shows us that a woman who was considered obese turns out to be a head nurse after her journey of being on a diet. I feel as if this is important to not only the article but the picture because it shows Bradley working out and sticking to her plan of getting into better shape and losing the access weight she had. It is also important because it shows many people that just because you are overweight doesn't mean that something is impossible. Although Bradley fell short of becoming a doctor she didn't give up entirely, she became a head nurse.
