The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy of books and Tolkien's most famous works. The first book The Fellowship of the Ring was published on July 29th, 1954, the second book The Two Towers was published on November 11th, 1954, and the final book The Return of the King was published on October 20th, 1955. The books became overwhelmingly popular for their intruiging story, believable and likeable characters, and the epic battle between good and evil presented by the trilogy. The trilogy follows the adventures of Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring on their quest to destroy the One Ring and save the world from the Dark Lord Sauron. At the conclusion of the first book the Fellowship dissolves and the next two books follow both Frodo and Aragorn, a member of the fellowship, as they both work on their separate quests to save Middle-Earth.
