Yesterday, Gerty and I were supposed to photograph a strike that happened at a match factory. Oh, the irony. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to photograph out there as there wasn’t much light out but I saved the newspaper article because it feels like a big moment. I found this in today’s paper and I just had to save this article. It seems like most things today are run by men and I am glad to see women working their way up in this patriarchal society. Most girls don’t attend school so it’s very rare to hear about a woman graduating university. In a way, this lady reminds me of my sister, Gerty. Not that Gerty was the first to open her own shop, but they both are very independent and won’t quit even when the odds aren’t in their favor. As a mother, I was very saddened when I saw this in the paper. The images and headlines speak for themselves. How are so many people okay with children dying in factories and leaving children with strangers? I could not imagine my child being put into such dangerous situations. I keep hearing about the terrible conditions adults work in, and I can’t imagine it would be any better for these children. The articles definitely don’t make it seem like they are.
