The Netherlands means low-lying country and is also known as Holland. The Netherlands is referenced once in "The Royal Exchange" when the narrator encounters many different people of different nationalities in the Royal Exhchange, one of which is a Dutchman: " I am infinitely delighted in mixing with these several ministers of commerce, as they are distinguished by their different walks and different languages: sometimes I am justled among a body of Armenians: sometimes I am lost in a crowd of Jews, and sometimes make one in a group of Dutchmen." "The Royal Exchange" was published in 1711. In the 18th century, the Dutch mercantile system became largely dependent on England due to a large amount of debt. However, the Netherlands had been a major trade power in the previous century. Addison's work shows the global trade market all present in England, marking a shift in global power.
