Newstead Abbey, formerly an Augustinian priory, was the ancestral home of Lord Byron. It dates back to 1170. Sir John Byron of Colwick acquired the property from King Henry VIII in 1540. Lord Byron’s beloved Newfoundland, Boatswain, is buried here. Today the Abbey is publicly owned and features Byron memorabilia.
