It took years for the building of Notre Dame to be completed, but something that makes it interesting is the many different architects it had over the years. Multiple people got to put their designs into the making of this Cathedral. The building started with Maurice De Sully, and ended a century later under the construction of someone else. The people of France gave ideas and their own insight into the building of this Cathedral. Something that made the cathedral even more of a center point for the people is the novel Victor Hugo wrote, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This book not only fed into some of what was happening in France, it also brought popularity back to the Cathedral after it had been destroyed. The People then wanted it restored as it represented them as a whole. It was the people who started the building, and it was the people who would restore it. The restoration of the Cathedral was “launched in the 1840s”(Fuentes). Eugene Viollet-le-Due led the restoration and later in the nineteenth century, “the city of Paris itself also began to modernize in ways that would benefit”(Fuentes) the cathedral. It is interesting that this Cathedral seemed to be constantly in construction and something that the people of France genuinely cared about. Even today, the fire that burned down the famous Notre Dame, has caused a cry to rebuild the monument. If anything, Notre Dame has become a monument that reflects the nature of the people, which will surely be seen through the current rebuilding of the old monument.
