In August 1874, Parliament passed the Public Worship Regulation Act. Its stipulations meant that no fewer than five clergymen would be prosecuted and imprisoned for their use of the kinds of materials—such as vestments, incense and altar bread—that Watts & Co. intended to produce after its founding in July 1874.
