After The Corn Laws of 1815, riots broke out over the cost of bread. This led to the destruction and violence depicted in the image. London was most hostile to the law due to the higher population of working-class people who now struggled to afford food. The movement to the repeal the corn laws made heavy use of imagery in its campaign material. The law lasted for quite a while, so even though there was resistance, the laws persisted. The image shows the struggle of the poorer men of the era.

Painted by Eugene Delacroix in 1838. The painting depicts legendary Romance pianist Frederic Chopin and his then lover, French writer Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, better known by her pseudonym George Sand.

The portrait depicts Chopin playing piano to the right while Sand listens and sews, to his left.

The portrait was never finished by Delacroix, and though was originally a double portrait, was later cut in two and sold as individual portraits of Chopin and Sand. We do not know how the idea of the painting came about, nor do we know for sure how the painting looked before it...

Grip was Charles Dickens' beloved pet raven. He was a mischevious creature with an impressive vocabulary for a bird. Dickens was very fond of Grip to the point where he made the bird a character in the novel "Barnaby Rudge." Unfortunately, Grip suddenly died one night in 1841. This is possibly due to his odd habit of eating paint. The year of 1816, the year that Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron spent their time in Geneva together, was known in Europe as "the year without a summer". This was due to the eruption of Mount Tambora in present-day Indonesia (then the Dutch East Indies), quite possibly the most powerful eruption in recorded history (University Corporation for Atmospheric Research [UCAR], 2012). This painting was completed within a year of the completion of the Pavilion's expansion. It depicts the main dining hall, decorated with bright colors and images of the Far East.

This is an image of the "Father of Romanticism," Jean-Jacques Rousseau. You can see the transition of the Enlightenment period to the Romantic period through the color of Rousseau's clothes. The clothing depicted shows a connection to the Earth and the humility of the philosopher. In the Romantic period artists used brown, earthy colors to relate a love of nature, the brown clothing Rousseau wears lets us connect him with his role in the transition to the Romantic period. 

Like other clarinet varieties, bass clarinets are typically made of grenadilla (African Blackwood), with plastic resin as a cheaper alternative. German silver (an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel) makes up the various keys to shine without allowing tarnish. Materials such as cork, leather, felt, wax, and stainless steel help line and work spring mechanisms within the instrument.
