The Royal Manchester Institute was founded in 1823 at a meeting in which merchants, local artists, and other members of the public were keen to promote the culture of Manchester. The institution was housed in a building designed by Charles Barry in 1824 and was completed in 1835, where it held regular art exhibitions and held collected works of art. It is now the Manchester Art Gallery.
