The Rural Muse

On 14 July 1835, John Clare published The Rural Muse, containing “The Nightingale’s Nest,” “The Thrush’s Nest,” and other accomplished and beloved works. The publishing history of these poems, many of which had appeared earlier in the periodical press and in literary annuals, sheds light on trends in literary publishing and on the poems themselves.
