In the novel Scarborough is a town that Getrude and Phyllis stayed with the Devonshires after their father’s passing. They remain with them while they look for a tenant to set up their photography business in. Scarborough is a seaside town near the North Sea coastline. It originated in the 10th century by the Vikings as a fishing settlement previously having been a Roman Signal station. The population of Scarborough rose in 1889, with it growing more improved through an act of parliament in 1805. By 1851 the population of the town was about 13,000.

"Gertrude and Phyllis arrived early in the day from Scarborough, where they had been staying with the Devonshires, and at about six o'clock Fanny appeared in a four-wheel cab; she had been borne off to Tunbridge Wells by the Pratts, some six weeks before" (Chapter IV).

THIS is the town today.
