During the Genevan summer of 1816, Mary Shelley conceived of Frankenstein and began writing it as part of a competition with her husband Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Byron's physician Polidori. The novel was published anonymously in 1818. The second edition, published in 1820, bore her name.
