Shelley's Guitar: Contexts, Travels, and Adventures, 1815-2020

This is a map of important contexts, travels, and transformative moments involving "Shelley's Guitar," (Jane Williams's guitar, depicted in Percy Shelley's poem "With a Guitar -- to Jane." The map also details the hometowns, travels, and places associated with the people who handled the guitar and the guitarists and guitar-makers who have shaped its adventures and public image. The instrument was created by Pisan luthier Fernando Bottari, in about 1815-6, given by Percy Bysshe Shelley to Jane Williams, and donated by Captain Edward Silsbee, U.S. merchant seaman, to the Bodleian Library at Oxford University, where it now "lives." The map is created by students in the Spring 2020 section of English Literature II at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Stay tuned (no pun intended) to see the map take shape.
