First setting: This is where the story begins in the year of 1943. The characters become aware of the government's dislike of the Jewish population, however they are in disbelief despite hearing the experiences of someone who had escaped forced labor. The main character Eliezer lived in Sighet in one of the Jewish parts of town, owned a shop, and were involved in the religious scene. As time went on, the Germans sent soldiers into Sighet. Government orders are placed against the Jews, they must wear identifying badges, give up their posessions, and are forced to live in two small areas of Sighet.
