Eight Secrets of the Taj Mahal | Travel| Smithsonian Magazine

The Taj Mahal was built between 1631 and 1648 as a marble mausoleum dedicated to the memory of the deceased wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is widely recognized as the "jewel of Muslim art in India" (unesco), and it is considered the greatest architectural acheivement in the Indo-Islamic heritage.

"If she were the queen she would tear it down and build a new house, not this flat-rooted block but something elegant and spirited, with minarets and spires, domes and mosaics, a beautiful garden instead of this bare forecourt. Something like the Taj Mahal."
