Triangular Trade

circa. 1500 16th-19th Centuries

The Triangular trade was a prominent bundle of trade routes that were used during the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. These routes connected Africa, Europe, and North and South America, with the general flow of the routes into each other forming a triangular shape, hence the name. The most used of these routes, and the most taught of which, was the one that traded slave labor across the Atlantic from Africa into Europe, which was called the Middle Passage. These trade routes are important for British history because it was one f the main contributing factors towards turning Britain into a colonial power and created a cycle of economic reliance on each of the participating nations. The conditions of the slaves being traded into Europe was something called into question during the time of the Triangular Trade being active, leading to people realizing the cruelty experienced by the slaves and the larger abolitionist movement to take place.

The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano is one of the most read slave narratives of all time and a text of prominent importance during the rise of the abolitionist movement. It highlights the entire life of Olaudah Equiano, as is related to his experience with slavery, which has been debated over its accuracy for as long as it has existed. Most of the dissenting takes over Equiano’s origin were dismissed during the time of the Abolitionist movement as opinions that only existed because they were in opposition of abolition. However, there were documents found and revealed in 1999 that definitively call into question Equiano’s story. One of these documents is a baptismal record from a church in London dated February 9th, 1759. This document lists Equiano as having been born in Carolina, and this is corroborated by additional documentation that Equiano has verified in the past, before his narrative was written. It’s because of this that some think that the narrative was constructed as a purely political piece using the stories of other enslaved peoples for the base of events.

Despite the title covering a wide range of dates, this was an event that occurred in the span of a single night of which the date cannot be definitively placed. The night was one that occurred in the summer of 1816, where several English writers including Mary Shelly, Lord Byron, and John Polidori, engaged in a friendly competition to see which of them could write the best mystery story. This followed a previous expedition by Mary Shelly where she travelled down the river Rhine and visited many of the places that would appear in the novel that she would eventually write, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Without this event, it is likely that the novel would not have been written.

Elizabeth Chantrelle was the wife of Eugene Marie Chantrelle, who was a French teacher who Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, was acquainted with. Neither of these individuals, Eugene or Elizabeth, were particularly noteworthy or important until Elizabeth Chantrelle was found dead on the second of January, 1878. She was poisoned with Opium, which was something that was confirmed that Eugene had attempted to do on several occasions prior. Their marriage, for the most part, was not considered a stable one, which led to a swift trial process considering all of the circumstantial evidence. The trial in which Eugene was found guilty for the murder of his wife is speculated to have been a direct inspiration in the creation of the story of Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. However, as the story was written eight years after the trial had occurred, it is possible that it was just a coincidence.

The Great War

28 Jul 1914 to 11 Nov 1918

Later known as World War I, this was a globe-spanning war between two distinct factions. The Allied powers, which consisted of France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Russia, Japan, and others, while the Central Powers, which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, The Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, and others. This was a war that was centered around the upset of the balance of power in the European nations, with nations such as Austria-Hungary falling out of power. While the war was done over the upset in the balance of power, it was also caused in part by economic factors, with many of the countries competing against each other in the area of industrial strength. And in this area, the Great War featured some of the most pertinent developments towards the advancement of war technology. Things such as the employment of gas weapons and trench warfare characterized the technological developments in the war, things that changed the course of war forever. The Great War only lasted for four years; however it was cited as having one of the largest death tolls of any war in history after the fact, which highlights the potentiality of the dark side in humanity to apply their talents to committing atrocities senselessly. Wartime economy also proved hard for civilian life, the effects of which are highlighted in works of literature of the time.

The Manhattan Project

18 Jun 1942 to 25 Aug 1947

The Manhattan Project was the secret initiative that led to the development of the world’s first atomic bomb. The Project was worked on in a variety of secret research environments scattered throughout the United States of America (ex: Los Alamos, New Mexico (This is the one where Robert J Oppenheimer was stationed at in with the role of Director), and Hanford, Washington). This project would culminate in the development of the Little Boy and the Fat Man model atomic bombs, which would change the landscape of war forever after their deployment in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War. The Manhattan Project was not a solo undertaking by the United States, as the project also had assistance from the United Kingdom and Canada. The Manhattan Project would feature some of the greatest feats of Physics research of the time, all in service to the destructive potential of the bomb. The feats of technological development that The Manhattan Project was responsible for was a main point of inspiration for Kazuo Ishiguro in the development of the setting for his novel Never Let Me go. Earlier drafts featured a setting that was post-nuclear, and the eventual inspiration for the final setting was imagining a world where the advancements towards physics spurred by the Manhattan Project were attributed to the realm of Biology, instead.
