On 26 May 1879, the Treaty of Gandamak was signed by Afghanistan and Britain. The treaty signed over formerly Afghan territories, like the Khyber Pass, to India; allowed a British mission to be permanently stationed in Afghanistan; established British control of Afghan foreign policy; and opened up Afghanistan to free trade with India.
