Tunbridge Wells is located in Kent, England next to Sussex. Although many people lived there since its establishment, it wasn’t until the 1870s that sewer systems were installed in the town. A general hospital was established in 1884, and by the 1880s the population of Tunbridge Wells surpassed 25,000. In the novel, this is where Aunt Caroline and Uncle Septimus live, and where Fanny was when she was staying for a period of time towards the beginning of the novel
“Aunt Caroline and Uncle Septimus came up from Tunbridge Wells for the wedding, and the Devonshires, who were away, lent their carriage.” (Chapter XVI).
