In Victorian Children’s Literature this term we’ll read an assortment of novels that describe and critique the state of Victorian education including Alice in Wonderland, The Water Babies, The Daisy Chain, and school stories by Thomas Hughes, Talbot Baines Reed, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and L.T. Meade. We’ll think about village schools, home-schooling, public schools, dame schools, Sunday schools, the increasing role of government in education and the standardization of education, university education, and education for women.
