Wairau River

One of the longest rivers on New Zealand’s South Island, the Wairau River flows for 170km from the Spenser Mountains to the Cook Strait. One of the largest Māori settlements was located near the river's mouth. The 1843 Wairau Affray occurred between the Māori people and European colonizers in the Wairau Valley.
