Wellington Boots (p. 159 Gemma Hardy)
The Wellington boot was originally a type of leather boot copied from Hessian boots. They were worn and made popular by the 1st Duke of Wellington. They were associated with the British aristocracy and middle class in the early 19th century. However, in Gemma’s time, the name was given to waterproof boots made of rubber and are no longer associated with a particular class. They are usually worn when walking on wet or muddy ground.
