Funchal, Madeira (pictured below from 1879) is significant to Jane Eyre because it is the origin of the inheritance that Jane receives in Chapter XXXIII. This is problematic due to the colonialism and the "slave tainted economy" that has been running the island during that time (Valint 322). The money Jane inherits was earned through the slave-trade and profits from selling individuals. This information comes from a JSTOR, a well-established domain for academic journals, titled Madeira and Jane Eyre's Colonial Inheritance by Alexandra Valint. This location illustrates colonization and empire because of the political climate of the island at the time. Most of the money that was being circulated from the island and all over the world, and eventually into Jane's inheritance, was coming from the profit of enslavement. Mapping this location on COVE reveals how the history behind Madeira complicates or deepens the plot due to its roots in slavery, making Jane's inheritance a form of blood money.
