St. Kitts is important to the historical context of Wide Sargasso Sea. St. Kitts is a small island that is a part of the Caribbean. As WSS is set in the late 1830's, this was time period where the African Slave Trade was terminated by the British Empire 20 years prior. The image below is a drawing of slaves reacting to news of their emancipation. This information comes from Wikipedia. This location illustrates the firsthand experiences of those who were impacted by the African Slave Trade in the Caribbean and what life after may have looked like. These locations along the Sargasso Sea as a whole, reflect and important history that is often overlooked. Mapping this location on COVE and providing context for these locations, that have historically been remembered as triumphs of colonialism, allows for a sense of reclamation of a culture and of a people to be learned and experienced.
