"Woman I" by Willem de Kooning (1950)

Type: Gallery Image | Not Vetted

"Woman I" mixes aggressive brushstrokes with abstract and figurative elements, representing the tension between abstraction and representation.

A raw, expressive painting that features a distorted portrayal of a woman’s figure, with exaggerated, almost monstrous features. This piece is a combination of abstraction and symbolism, where the female figure is both recognizable and unrecognizable at the same time.

The composition is dynamic and chaotic, with large, sweeping brush strokes, rough textures, and intense colors. De Kooning speaks to abstract expressionism using a palette of bold hues including reds, yellows, pinks, whites, and blacks to create a sense of energy and movement. The mural is intended to make viewers explore the complex themes of womanhood, identity, and sexuality.
