The Victorian Age was a time of economic, social, and cultural change throughout England. It was characterized by "momentous and intimidating" social movements. Under the reign of Queen Victoria as people migrated from the county to the city in hopes of finding better wages as a result of the Industrial Revolution. In the Goblin Market, Rosetti addresses the skepticisim associated with sudden ascces to some goods that were unsustainable. The maids were tempted daily by goblin men that could not have been grown in the same enironment and are not home to England. Rosetti wanted to comment her negative opinion on British businessmen. It also allowed Rosetti to comment on the dangers that English women would face being that they were new shoppers. Women were allowed to leisurely shop after the creation of the department shortly after the trade boom. Allowing women to take advantage of the innovations in international trade would be one fo the first ways into social reform as a result of the Industrial Revolution, and grated women rights to both political and economic rights. Women who were unmarried or redundant were desperate to improve their quality of life but had  few opportunities for social advancement that many of girls turned to the booming London prostitution industry in order to make a living.
