Engaging English (F19 ENGL 202, Purdue) Dashboard

Description

image of surfingThis class will teach you how to surf (the Internet) and about the various ways that English studies have been transformed over the last few decades.  Starting with some basic close-reading and analysis skills, we will then explore how those skills have been increasingly applied to new areas of inquiry (tv, film, culture, critical theory, and politics).  We will also employ new digital tools that change the way we approach our subjects of inquiry, including Web annotation, timeline-building, gallery-building and GIS mapping.  As we proceed, we will consider the nature of English studies:  What is an English department and how does it relate to the rest of the university?  What can you do with an English degree?  Why is it necessary to fight for English in an increasingly STEM-oriented world?

The Chopin family was not initally centered at this apartment, but were spurred into moving here by the death of the youngest daughter, Emilia, from tuberculosis. Frederic lived here from 1827-1830 with his famliy, after which he left Poland for Paris, France. The Parlor became a museum dedicated to Chopin in 1954, and has since closed in 2014.

While not much is known about the childhood of Kean, his birth would eventually lead to a revolutionary type of Shakesperian performance. Kean not only changed the way that actors were perceived, he forever revitalized the way that Shakespeare was performed on stage. Most likely born out of wedlock, which would have been considered disgraceful then, Kean had a poor childhood and had to work hard to eventually become an actor.

Located at the corner of Nassau and Ann Street in New York City, The Evening Mirror was a daily newspaper that ran for roughly 15 years (1844-1859). Edgar Allan Poe worked at this site from October 1844 to Feburary 1845 as both a critic and an editor. It was through this newspaper company that Poe was able to publish "The Raven" on January 29, 1845.
