Jasmine, the novel's protagonist, is born in Hasnapur, India. She is the fifth daughter of her family to be born, which means that she will not have any dowry money for her future marriage. Also, Jasmine's discussion of her life in India mainly focuses on the gender discrimination she experiences there, which proves to be a major theme for the entire novel.
A quotation that shows the gender discrimination that Jasmine faces in India includes: “If I had been a boy, my birth in a bountiful year would have marked me as lucky, a child with a special destiny to fulfill. But daughters were curses. A daughter had to be married off before she could enter heaven, and dowries beggared families for generations” (Mukherjee 39).

The second novel in this series picks up right where the first one leaves off. The two main characters, June and Day, are trying to escape from the horrors in Los Angeles. The rebel group that had helped the two out in the last novel, the Patriots, they have a base in Las Vegas. The two decided that this would be the safest bet for them, as they had alligned themselves with the Patriots. The duration of the novel takes place in Las Vegas as well.
As the novel comes to a close, we learn that the Patriots, a rebel group, brought June and Day here so that they would be safe from harm's way. After the actions that the two had taken in this novel, they would need the shelter and safety from being away from the main city, for now they are both wanted.
Considered to be the real life counterpart of the Mount Olympus featured in Greek mythology, this is where it was said that the Greek gods lived as they watched over humans. This is also where Achilles' mother, the nymph Thetis, asks Hephaestus to forge armour for Achilles twice, first when he is young and second after Patroclus, who donned Achilles' armour, dies in battle. He crafted Achilles his fabled shield as well here, which Achilles uses it in his battle against Hector.
As the city of Troy was surrounded by high walls that could not be breached, a majority of the fights took place outside of Troy, many of which in or around the river Skamandros. In modern times, it is also known as the Karamenderes River, and during The Illiad it was also considered the home of a minor god of the same name. The river god was one of many that had gotten involved in the conflict, choosing Troy's side, that fought against other gods.
Note: Google Maps does not actually pick up the river, but it does have a real world counterpart as mentioned within Turkey!
