L302 English Lit Survey 2 Spring 2022 Dashboard

Description

FROM BROWNING to BRITNEY SPEARS: Brit Lit isn't just musty books and old dead white guys anymore. In this course, we will explore the ways in which British literature from 1800 to the present informs our current conceptions of politics, religion, gender, race, sexuality, and technology. By focusing on the themes that transcend time and nation, we will investigate the historical origins of the social problems that pervade our modern discourse.

This course has been redesigned to take advantage of new digital technologies that will enable digital projects, collaborative online adaptation, and innovative reading practices.

Throughout the years, language and identity have been repressed and censored, insofar as to threaten the well-being and human rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. When looking back on history, we will explore instances where people were oppressed, dehumanized, and murdered for no other reason other than being who they are and existing. This timeline will showcase key events leading up to the passing of Florida's House Bill 1557, which resulted in the "Don't Say Gay" protests. We will explore the threats to free speech, in regard to the blatant bigotry, division, stigmatization, and polarization of LGBTQIA+ clearly put forth in the Florida House Bill 1557. A Repression of Language and Assaults on Human Rights for LGBTQIA+ will explore thematic elements such as censorship, expression, queerness, legislation, protests, free speech, and human rights. Our timeline will...

A crowd of journalists at the Press Club of India in New Delhi gathered to protest against the recent raids on NDTV, India’s oldest TV news channel, by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The government is silencing freedom of speech by criminalizing political activity as civil disobedience. Since the BJP government of Narendra Modi took office, new forms of censorship are proliferating (M. Prabhu, 2017).

The Will Smith Oscars slap has been a hot topic since it happened. While it is entertaining and somewhat striking to watch, it is important to know the significance of the racial history behind the reactions that this event has garnered. While some would argue that Will Smith's reaction does nothing for the Black community and feeds into the racial stereotypes that have been placed upon him as a Black man, this calls into question why these stereotypes are still around in modern times today. Additionally, this brings to the surface the idea of fake news and how much harm it causes. Throughout history, there has been plenty of racial factors that have added on to the reaction that Will Smith has gotten. There is no telling when these racial stereotypes became normalized, however, this event is making people face the reality of these stereotypes. It also calls into question just how misleading fake news are and why it is important to be properly informed of these events and...

Great Renegotiation

The Great Resignation is a labor movement that began amidst the significant shift in the workforce during Covid in 2020, and continues to shake up the worker-employer status quo. Workers are demanding that they be heard, if not through the usual means of worker-employer communications, then through quitting for greener pastures. Workers are taking a stand, and if their employers won't listen to their opinions & concerns, then it's clear that they can quit for better opportunities. In an economic climate where millions of families are categorized as impoverished, and billionaires are funding their own space field trips, the question of having a fair government in a capitalistic society is surfacing on the minds of workers everywhere.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 health crisis, the world was once again alerted to a global threat and crisis. The world turned its attention to the region of Eastern Europe, specifically Ukraine. In February of 2022, Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine as the world watched in disbelief. While many were likely surprised to see this invasion take place, others expected it as conflict between the two countries has existed for years. This incident is a climactic event within a period of passive aggression and proxy war carried out by Russia toward Ukraine at the expense of Ukrainian and Crimean people. The conflict is not the first conflict to occur between various governments in the region of Crimea and the broader region of Eastern Europe. In order to better understand the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as well as other nations, we must first understand how the conflict originated, escalated, and evolved over time. Through not...
