Elizabeth Adela Forbes (née Armstrong) was a Canadian artist born on 29 December 1859 in Kingston, Ontario. Initially, she received a private education at home, but later travelled to England with her mother to further her formal education at the South Kensington Art School. She continued her education by travelling to and studying at New York, Brittany, and the Netherlands. in the autumn of 1885, she established a studio in Newlyn, Cornwall. Armstrong met her husband, the artist Stanhope Forbes, whilst living in St. Ives and they married in 1889.
