“The Crown”, a flagship TV series produced by Netflix, tells the vicissitudes of the English Royal Family from the abdication of Edward VIII to 1997.

Practically perfect in every way, this series became popular not only for its settings and costumes, but also for the quality of the historical reconstruction of those years and the complexity of their characters, which are interpreted by a phenomenal cast, that reveals the most vulnerable side of each one of the House of Windsors.

In particular, the figure of Elizabeth II is masterfully interpreted by Claire Foy, Olivia Coleman and Imelda Staunton, who, together with the screenwriters, have been able to masterfully combine reality and dramatization, thus making a figure apparently so distant as that of the Queen close to us, capable of humanly shaping the history of the twentieth century.

Happy Christmas.

Twenty-five years ago my grandfather broadcast the first of these Christmas messages. Today is another landmark because television has made it possible for many of you to see me in your homes on Christmas Day. My own family often gather round to watch television as they are this moment, and that is how I imagine you now.

I very much hope that this new medium will make my Christmas message more personal and direct.

It is inevitable that I should seem a rather remote figure to many of you. A successor to the Kings and Queens of history; someone whose face may be familiar in newspapers and films but who never really touches your personal lives. But now at least for a few minutes I welcome you to the peace of my own home.

That it is possible for some of you...

On my twenty-first birthday I welcome the opportunity to speak to all the peoples of the British Commonwealth and Empire, wherever they live, whatever race they come from, and whatever language they speak.

Let me begin by saying 'thank you' to all the thousands of kind people who have sent me messages of good will. This is a happy day for me; but it is also one that brings serious thoughts, thoughts of life looming ahead with all its challenges and with all its opportunity.

At such a time it is a great help to know that there are multitudes of friends all round the world who are thinking of me and who wish me well. I am grateful and I am deeply moved.

As I speak to you today from Cape Town I am six thousand miles from the country where I was born. But I am certainly not six thousand miles from home. Everywhere I...

My Lord Mayor,

Could I say, first, how delighted I am that the Lady Mayoress is here today.

This great hall has provided me with some of the most memorable events of my life. The hospitality of the City of London is famous around the world, but nowhere is it more appreciated than among the members of my family. I am deeply grateful that you, my Lord Mayor, and the Corporation, have seen fit to mark the fortieth anniversary of my Accession with this splendid lunch, and by giving me a picture which I will greatly cherish.

Thank you also for inviting representatives of so many organisations with which I and my family have special connections, in some cases stretching back over several generations. To use an expression more common north of the Border, this is a real 'gathering of the clans'.

In conclusion, it was found that drug use is still a prevalent action, and its representations can be seen in the literary works written and published in of the US and UK during 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Statistics showed that drug use are similarly prevalent in the US and UK.

The writers lived during 18th, 19th and 20th centuries reflected their experiences and knowledge on their literary works in relation to their drug use.

Through the information obtained from distant reading and analyses, in general, it was found that their experiences were different and various.

There is a frequent use of words related to opium. For example, in the book by De Quincey, the word “opium” was repeated 172 times. In another book called “Trainspotting”, related words like “Opium”, “Drugs” and so on were also mentioned frequently.

In some parts, there were positive...

Introduction

In this project, drug use and its representations in literary works are the main issues. For this reason, to show how it was common during the last three centuries and it is still a prevalent issue in modern life is the one of the main goals of the project.

In line with this, firstly, related statistics and graphs about drug use are presented. Secondly, research to decide on which books will be chosen was carried out. The article written by Day and Smith (2003) was read and the literary works mentioned in the article were chosen for analysis. Accordingly, the poem “Kubla Khan” written by Coleridge in 18th century, the book “Confessions of an Opium-Eater” written by De Quincey in 19th century, the book “Junky” written by Burroughs in 20th century and the book “Trainspotting” written by Welsh in 20th century are examined in this project.
