1984 is a dystopian novel that follows the life of the protagonist, Winston Smith. Smith is a low-ranking member of a political party named “the party”. In the book, Smith is frustrated with the ruler of the party, “Big Brother”, who controls the lives of everyone. The book was wildly popular, it was meant to be a statement about where totalitarianism was leading society.
