On 9 September 1886, the
Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works is signed in Berne,
Switzerland. The international agreement establishes that copyright begins as soon as a work is published and that it extends to translations, adaptations, and performances. The agreement comes into effect on 5 December 1887.
