Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christiana Rossetti's brother,  illustrated what he thought the goblins looked like and the two sisters. The poem describes each goblin to be different from the other. Each goblin had a distinct taunt, and look. Notice that the goblins are not fully humans, they contain animal features. One shaped like an owl, one a dog, one a cat, and so on. Due to the rise in population, there were less jobs available to women, especially those that were lower class. Therefore, many women went into prostitution to be able to support themselves and their children, if they had "illegitimate" children. Many social reformers watched this closely because prostitution became a major concern during the industrialization period. Sex was only supposed to be used for procreation, so what they were doing was considered outlandish and wrong.  This painting was created by Dante Gabriel Rossetti showimg a feeble woman laying against a will seeming to give herself to her ex lover.  This painting is a visualization of prostitution during the 1800's.  Another viewpoint of this painting is a woman who seems to be fighting off a man, but she seems as if she is weak. As you pay close attention to the details you will see how she has a cape to cover her head and dress that goes down to her ankles. The red of the pomegranate and of the lips resound in the auburn hair that Rossetti chose for the last version, perhaps a reminiscence of his late wife Elizabeth Siddal. Rossetti depicts Proserpine in her full power, allowing more light on the wall behind her and on the many green folds of her majestic dress.
